GOSS, GONU and UNICEF Strategy Meeting in Juba
Fri, February 8 2008
By Nyibol Deng [Juba, South Sudan]

The Government of National Unity (GONU) and the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) are holding discussions with UNICEF based on the shared action for children over the next four years. The Government of National Unity delegation headed by Dr. Alfatih Ali Siddig, the Undersecretary of the federal Ministry of International Cooperation, arrived in Juba on Tuesday, February 5 for the one-day workshop held at the main conference room in the Home and Away Business Center.

The joint strategy meeting, the first to be held with UNICEF in Juba, Southern Sudan, since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was attended by senior government officials from the GONU, GOSS and technical experts from UNICEF Sudan. The purpose of this meeting was to reach a consensus on shared goals for children as outlined in the government’s development plans, the UN Development Assistance Framework and UNICEF’s own activities in Sudan. The meeting was part of an ongoing series of consultations, held both at national and state levels.

Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, the government of Southern Sudan Minister for Regional Cooperation, Dr. Alfatih Ali Siddig (GONU), Mr. Ted Chaiban, UNICEF Sudan’s representative and Mr. Peter Crowley, Director of Operations in UNICEF Southern Sudan Area Program were all asked to give statements to open the meeting. Referring back to the Sudan Country Analysis that was conducted by GONU/GOSS and the UN agencies in 2007, Dr. Barnaba mentioned that it had highlighted key development challenges confronting the two governments, that the development challenges, including provision of basic services, governance and the rule of law, livelihoods and productive sectors and peace building constitute sectors that are critical to the implementation of the CPA. He stressed that if these challenges are addressed then they are indeed supporting the implementation of the CPA, and by extension, working together to meet the aspirations of the people: the Sudanese population.

Later on during the day, a joint communiqué was approved and issued by the Government of National Unity, Government of Southern Sudan and UNICEF, before the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Regional Cooperation, Dr. Cirinno Hiteng, alongside Dr. Alfatih Ali and Ted Chaiban closed the meeting.
