UNMIS Press Statement
Tue, March 3 2009
By LO - Brussels [Khartoum - SUDAN]
Khartoum, 01 March 2009: UNMIS strongly protests today’s Al-Raed report headlined “Qazi admits UNMIS provided information to the ICC about Sudan”. The report is a complete fabrication.

The Al-Raed report is a distortion of a recently published Egyptian magazine article entitled "I did not provide the ICC with reports on Al-Bashir -SRSG".

UNMIS questions Al-Raed’s motive in misrepresenting the SRSG on so sensitive an issue at this particular time.

UNMIS calls upon Al-Raed to correct this flagrant example of misreporting which, in the mission’s view, verges on disinformation.

UNMIS has issued a number of previous statements about media misrepresentation of remarks by the SRSG on the ICC issue.

UNMIS has repeatedly urged media to uphold standard journalistic practices and to check with the UNMIS Spokesperson’s office when reporting on UNMIS-related matters.

Mr. Ashraf Qazi is the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Sudan. He was appointed on September 11, 2007 and heads the UN peace Mission in Sudan.

The UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) was formed on 24 March 2005, with the UN Security Council's adoption of Resolution 1590, which tasked UNMIS with supporting the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1812 on April 30, 2008 to extend the mandate of UNMIS until April 30, 2009, with the intention to renew it for further periods.
